Actor-director-comedian-singer and more recently, a budding entrepreneur and humanitarian, Afdlin Shauki has always been the class clown and prankster among his schoolmates in secondary school. Although he was accepted to receive a scholarship by the government to study abroad, he realised that he enjoyed being a comedian more than being an engineer.
His local debut as an actor was his role in the movie Mimpi Moon. He was honoured with a Best Actor award at the Anugerah Skrin Panca Delima Awards in 2000, for the leading role as Daniel in the romantic movie Soal Hati. He then filmed Soalnya Siapa? a prequel to the story.
In 2005, he was awarded Most Promising New Director, Best Screenplay and Best Original Story at the Malaysian Film Festival for the movie Buli which he had both written and directed. In the same year, he was awarded for Best Actor, Best Director and Best Screenplay at the Anugerah Skrin Awards (Malaysian Screen Awards).
Afdlin is also a singer, musician and live performer. Together with his band Acid Iz, Afdlin presents his own flavour of R&B, acid jazz and funk, high on energy and performance power. He was nominated in the category of Best Male Vocal Performance for his work on the IKHLAS 92 album. His debut album FUUYO! was released in the year 2003.
Afdlin is well known for his comedic talents and onscreen persona as an actor, director and presenter. He received the award for Best Presenter in an Entertainment Programme during the prestigious 1999 Asian Television Awards for his role as host on the talk show Bila Larut Malam on Astro.
He produced the comedy sketch show, Ah-Ha, co-starring Harith Iskander, with his production company Vision Works. He starred as the lead in a local sitcom, Show Me The Money and, directed the English language show Island FM which he conceptualised and was produced by Vision Works.
He is also an activist and contributes widely to those in need, including setting up his own foundation. In January 2015, Afdlin started a mission to help the refugees of Syria in Jordan. He, along with a few other volunteers and activists, visited the regions of refuge throughout Jordan. His goal from the program was to raise USD100,000 to help the refugees, and to raise awareness about the sufferings of his brothers and sisters in Islam.
