In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.
Our event is called TEDxKL, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxKL event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized
Derek Sivers – Entrepreneur and TED Fellow
Derek Sivers founded CD Baby in 1998, which went on to become the largest seller of independent music online, generating $100 million in sales for 150,000 musicians. In 2008, Derek Sivers sold the company for $22 million, giving the proceeds to a charitable trust for music education. Derek Sivers is a frequent speaker at TED Conferences, with his videos attracting more than 5 million views.
Myshkin Ingawale – Co-Founder of Biosense Technologies and TED Fellow
A TED 2012 Fellow, Myshkin Ingawale is the co-founder of Biosense Technologies, a medical device venture focusing on point-of-care non-invasive diagnostics. In the past, Myshkin Ingawale has worked at McKinsey & Company as a business consultant and a researcher affiliated to MIT’s Senseable City Lab.
Professor Dr. Ille Gebeshuber
Professor Dr. Ille Gebeshuber – Professor of Physics and Expert in Nanotechnology, Biomimetics & Tribology
A Professor of Physics from Austria, Dr. Ille Gebeshuber is an expert in Nanotechnology, Biomimetics and Tribology. Unlike most of her peers, her approach to science is wide and holistic, bridging over to biology, the arts and the social sciences. Dr. Ille Gebeshuber is currently seconded from her permanent post at the Vienna University of Technology to Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), and serves on various international strategy boards, expert panels, editorial boards, scientific advisory boards. Dr. Ille Gebeshuber published two monographs on biomimetics and nanotechnology.
Jo Kukathas – Artistic Director, Instant Café Theatre and CHAI
Jo Kukathas is one of the grand dames of the local performing arts scene. She has played the roles of writer, actor and director, sometimes all at the same time, in countless award-winning theatre productions. Jo Kukathas is currently the Artistic Director at the Instant Café Theatre and CHAI (Cafe House of Arts and Ideas).
Zann Huang – Photographer, TIME Magazine & Asian Geographic
A largely self-taught photographer, Zann Huang began her first serious foray into photojournalism after the tsunami in January 2005. She has since covered humanitarian and socio-political issues in restricted areas. Zann Huang’s works have been published in various publications, honoured with prestigious awards and exhibited at exhibitions worldwide. Her works can be seen here.
Wong Siew Te
Wong Siew Te – Sun Bear Conservationist
Known as the Sun Bear Man in some circles, Wong Siew Te is in the midst of setting up the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) in Sabah. The project aims to save the oft-overlooked animals through research, education, rehabilitation and habitat conservation.Wong Siew Te’s efforts are backed by the Wildlife Conservation Network, an innovative group that uses a venture capital model to protect some of the world’s most endangered species.
Zurairi AR – Founder of Unscientific Malaysia
Zurairi AR is the founder of Unscientific Malaysia, a Malaysian community that aims to gather as many rationalists, humanists, freethinkers and secularists to advocate science, scepticism and free thought. Zurairi AR is also a news researcher at The Malaysian Insider.
Kevin Mark Low
Kevin Mark Low – Architect, smallprojects
Drawing from ten years of experience at a firm in Kuala Lumpur, Kevin Mark Low left corporate practice to reclaim old dreams and established smallprojects in 2002. Kevin Mark Low has since lectured internationally and has conducted critiques and workshops at universities in Asia and Oceania. His work and articles have been published in architectural journals regionally as well as in the United States, Japan and Europe. Kevin Mark Low’s recent book, smallprojects, is currently being distributed in specialist bookstores across the world.
Michelle Lee – Froya
Michelle Lee – Froya – Singer, song writer
Michelle Lee, or more popularly known to her fans as Froya, is a singer with a repertoire that one can only describes as eclectic. Covering a range of genres from folk and electronica to pop, this talented lass discovered her calling out of a simple songwriting venture that turned into a career.
When Michelle Lee is not busy working on her new EP due for release in mid-2012, she composes jingles in an industry she has been involved in for 5 years.
Kavin Jay – Stand-up Comedian, Goodflers
Starting from his maiden stand-up comedy performance at The Actor’s Studio in 2006, Kavin Jay has now become a familiar face at various underground comedy shows and open mic sessions. Kavin Jay’s brand of humour is an eclectic mix of slapstick, edginess and political incorrectness. Kavin Jay recently founded Young Comedians Of Malaysia (YCOM), which aims to promote new names in the industry. He, Rizal van Geyzel and Dr. Jason Leong formed the Goodflers pact.
Khairil Yusof – Co-founder of Sinar Project
Khairil Yusof leads a team of dedicated developers at the non-profit and non-partisan Sinar Project, which uses open source technology and ideas to track and measure corruption. Sinar Project is a collection of related open source projects that comprises open data providers and applications that make information accessible to Malaysian citizens.
Goh Sze Ying
Goh Sze Ying – Visual designer and custodian of #BetterKL
Sze Ying is the custodian of #BetterKL, a campaign that calls upon urbanites to generate, innovate and participate in the social development of this city they call home. The film and animation major believes in combining multiple disciplines in practice, projects and processes, carrying this faith throughout her previous tenures as a visual and UI designer. Sze Ying was also responsible for Box Of Ideas, a crowdsourced creative art initiative in 2009 and 2010.
