At a tender age of four, Magdelene’s parents sensed their daughter’s interest in playing the piano and enrolled her for music classes. She progressed swifty and in October 2012, Magdalene auditioned for the Purcell scholarship which she received a few days later. England’s accomplished composers, Howard Blake (OBE) was greatly impressed with Magdalene’s ability “to read anything and play anything”, and proceeded to do a video tribute to her.
While the scholarship was welcomed, it came with the challenge of having to meet the supplementary expenses not covered by the scholarship. Sensing this, Rockie Siew, the Principal of the Rockschool Examination Board, highlighted her cause through Facebook. The video generated interest among people like Kwong Lok Wah, a professional trainer and coach, and Joelle Phua, manager of Steinway Malaysia. A trust fund was then set up and the initial round of fundraising was successful enough to allow Magdalene to pursue the first three years of her scholarship.
