Strategist, Catalyst for Change
Kelantan born Tommy Tan is a strategist by day, founder of Sparks – a small boutique set up that aimed to help SMEs on marketing, advertising and media plans. As part of his setup, he explores into gamification for the purposes of marketing and customer retention.
Having worked on many brands – big and small, global and local – from the knowledge and his experience garnered, Tommy wanted to put his skills to more meaningful returns by helping smaller medium enterprise in their marketing efforts. He believes that everyone can be the catalyst for change and that every idea should be entertained, nothing is too small and nothing is too big.
He was approached by his closest friends to help out a local breastfeeding advocate NGO on media planning. This lead to a new initiative, BFriendly – to help mothers’ breastfeeding journey a happier and friendlier one.
Tommy, was one of the many breastfed babies whose mother who only manage to breastfeed him up to four months due to the support from her environment in the 80s. Despite a modern Malaysia, where breastfeeding is highly encouraged for all new mothers, it was reported by the Malaysia’s Breastfeeding Association that only 16% of mothers successfully made it through six months.
With this in mind, Tommy together with a few friends starting on this journey to make breastfeeding everyone’s business, one city at a time.
